In today’s data crazy, texting, tweeting, socially networked world, I think people still value a good “clear” voice conversation. Don’t you agree? Even more importantly, a large portion of mobile operator revenues come from voice services. And as usual, we at Qualcomm are at it again, bringing an exceptionally high quality voice experience through our HD Voice offerings. So much so that Sprint announced their first HD Voice device running on Snapdragon recently.
Qualcomm’s HD voice offering is a collection of standards based wideband codecs (aka vocoders) bundled with a suite of voice quality enhancements. Traditionally, mobile networks have been using narrowband codecs such as EVRC (Enhanced Variable Rate Coding) in CDMA networks offered by Verizon, Sprint and others, and AMR (Adaptive Multi Rate) in WCDMA/3G networks, offered by AT&T, T-Mobile and others. HD Voice introduces new wideband codes— EVRC-NW for CDMA and AMR-WB for WCDMA/3G. Wideband codecs literally provide the full spectrum voice, meaning all the frequency components—lower frequency components that increase naturalness and comfort, as well as higher frequency components that improve voice clarity and intelligibility. EVRC-NW that Sprint will use for its CDMA network, is a unique, versatile and high efficiency vocoder, supporting both narrow and wideband modes. It provides either higher voice quality with same voice capacity as EVRC, or higher capacity but same quality as EVRC. In essence, it offers deployment flexibility to operators.
The other part of the HD Voice puzzle is Qualcomm’s suite of voice enhancements, which, when combined with wideband codecs, takes the quality a whole new level. The enhancements include Fluence™ multi-microphone noise suppression, which captures and removes background noise using multiple microphones strategically located on the phone, advanced active noise cancellation, a feature called Wide-Voice that artificially expands the narrow band voice received from legacy devices with narrowband codes to wideband, and many more. The sum result is that the users enjoy an excellent voice experience. And most importantly HD Voice is possible today!
So, when you are on your HD Voice phone, you can confidently say “Hear me loud and clear now!”
